The recommended target noise levels for recreational areas are 40 dB(A) during nighttime and 50 dB(A) during daytime. The visualization represents the deviation of the measured average noise levels within the study area from these target values. This deviation is translated into a calculated degree of image pixelation applied to the visual representation of the observed area. Increasing noise levels correspond to a higher degree of pixelation, thereby reducing the recognizability of the image. In Zurich’s city center, environmental noise pollution is predominantly caused by road traffic. Prolonged exposure to elevated noise levels has been shown to induce sleep disturbances and chronic stress, which are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, heart attack, high blood pressure, and metabolic diseases such as diabetes.
